The village of Utakata enjoys an uneasy peace.
However, that peace is suddenly rendered rudely asunder.
Hitherto unknown Oni appear from the north, ripping the defenses of the Midlands to shreds.

The defiantly independent Shiranui Village, refusing to obey the orders
of the Holy Mount... The "Council of Elders," shrouded in mystery...
Members of each of these organizations have now gathered in Utakata,
each with their own motivations and ambitions.

Since ancient times, a clandestine group has fought to keep the world safe from supernatural beings known as Oni. Calling themselves the Slayers, they have protected mankind from within the shadows of history for the past 1,000 years.
However, a prolonged age of peace was suddenly ended by a mighty catastrophe.
The land cracked, time was warped beyond all recognition, and the borders between the human world and the Otherworld, home of the Oni, became blurred.
During this time, vast hordes of Oni made their way from the Otherworld to this world.

With much of the land under the control of the Oni, the Slayers gathered together the survivors in various villages across the land in order to make their stand.
For seven days and seven nights, a short but violent conflict raged, and after it was over, mankind was barely able to maintain a hold on their territory.
This event later became known as the Awakening.
Ever since the tragic events of that week, the Slayers have emerged from the shadows to become the protectors of humanity in the new age.
